Minute Commentary
90' SIGN OFF
Thank you for joining our coverage of yet another exciting morning of World Cup action! Please tune back in later for the afternoon games as Croatia face off with Iceland and Nigeria take on Argentina.
90' FINAL ANALYSIS
France claim the group as they split the points today with the Danish. Their performance was clearly one that sought to earn this result as they rarely pushed far enough forward looking to find a winner. Denmark, though, must feel like they failed to capitalize on a few opportunities throughout today's match as a win would have seen them through to the knockout rounds as the winners of Group C. The two teams await the results of the final two matches today as that will determine who they play this weekend.
90' FINAL
The final whistle blows in Moscow and brings out a chorus of boos from the fans at Luzhniki Stadium. France and Denmark draw in this tournament's first scoreless match.
90' MBAPPE PASS
Kylian Mbappe weaves his way around several defenders down the right side of the box and tries to cut back a pass to Olivier Giroud. The pass is hit with far too little pace which allows Simon Kjaer ample time to step in, intercept the ball, and clear the danger.
89' SCORLESS GAME?
If neither team is able to find the back of the net in the upcoming few minutes of stoppage time, then this game will be the first scoreless match of the 2018 World Cup.
85' THE OSCAR DOES NOT GO TO GIROUD
Simon Kjaer and Olivier Giroud tangle in the area leading to the Frenchman going to the ground calling for a penalty. Sandro Ricci, though, sees right through the striker's clear and obvious dive. It does not even appear that this play will even receive a VAR review as it was a poor acting job by Giroud.
82' FEKIR SHOT ON GOAL
Nabil Fekir uses his left foot again to send a shot on goal from outside the area! This time his effort is place on target as it curls just inside the near post, but Kasper Schmeichel tracks the ball down and makes a textbook diving punch to send the ball out of the box.
79' GIROUD VOLLEY
Olivier Giroud chests down a pass at the top of the area with his back to goal and attempts an ambitious volley on goal. The effort sits up for him well, but his shot is completely misplaced as it flies high and wide of the Danish keeper's goal.
74' GIROUD FLICKED HEADER
Benjamin Mendy swings in a cross from the left flank and picks out a leaping Olivier Giroud at the penalty spot! Giroud attempts a flicked header toward goal, however his effort lacks aim as it soars high and wide of Kasper Schmeichel's goal.
70' FEKIR SHOT
Nabil Fekir makes his presence felt immediately as he finds a nice little pocket of space on the left side of the penalty area. The winger then rifles a left footed shot that initially looks perfect, though Kasper Schmeichel sees the attempt all the way as he watches the ball fly just wide of his near post and out for a goal kick.
68' SUBSTITUTION
Didier Deschamps will use France's second substitution of the day to bring out Antoine Griezmann for the talented attacking player Nabil Fekir. This is clearly a move to get Griezmann some rest before the knockout rounds while also getting Fekir some game time in a competitive match.
65' JSL INJURY?
Raphael Varane elevates to intercept a long ball intended to Jens Stryger Larsen and makes a decisive clearance, however the Danish player goes down immediately holding his head. Varane was well within his right to go for the ball however his follow through definitely connected with Stryger Larsen's head and neck.
59' ERIKSEN MISS
Christian Eriksen is the lucky recipient of a strange deflection that allows him to have another effort on goal! The right footed volley is struck low causing it to skip along the turf, however the aim is just off as it dribbles out of bounds just left of Steve Mandanda's near post.
58' PERMUTATIONS
Now that Peru is up 2-0 on Australia, Group C is essentially locked with France and Denmark both advancing. There is still a possibility that the Danes could find a goal to leap frog the French to take the group's top spot.
54' MANDANDA SPILLS IT
Steve Mandanda absolutely spills the ball after he stopped a long distance free kick taken by Christian Eriksen! The shot skipped off the turf which made it difficult for the keeper to control. The ball sat just a few feet from the keeper and was nearly deposited home by the charging Danish attackers, but Mandanda is able to scramble over to it and smother the ball in the nick of time.
51' SUB
Didier Deschamps decides to utilize an early second half substitution as he takes off Lucas Hernandez for Benjamin Mendy. What a terrific feeling it must be for the Manchester City man after he missed almost an entire season of play following a terrible injury and now to be playing in the World Cup for his nation.
49' HERNANDEZ FOUL
Martin Braithwaite's first touch to collect the ball in the midfield is exceptionally taken and allows him to turn around a French defender. Realizing he's been beaten, Lucas Hernandez spins and throws in a rough sliding tackle that scythes down Braithwaite. A foul is called, but no card is shown for the physical tackle.
46' SECOND HALF
The second half is underway! The teams have switched ends and it will now be France that attack from left to right. Neither Age Hareide nor Didier Deschamps elect to make a change at the break, so we continue on with the exact same 22 players as to when this match started.
45' HALF ANALYSIS
The Danes were the better team for a large majority of the first half creating a few chances and nearly earning penalty kicks on several different instances. France, on the other hand, struggled to do much of anything against this stout Danish Dynamite defense. They remained rigid at the back with Simon Kjaer, Andreas Christensen, and Mathias Jorgensen functioning as an anchor in the center of the box.
45' HALFTIME
Antoine Griezmann leads a counter attack that results in Mathias Jorgensen taking him down from behind to earn an easy yellow card. The French lineup to take the free kick but the whistle blows to end the half much to their dismay.
45' ERIKSEN SHOT
A loose ball falls to Christian Eriksen outside the area and the Tottenham man elects to have a shot. The right footed effort is struck with pace, though a French defender is right in the path to block it out for a corner kick.
44' GRIEZMANN OFFSIDE
Thomas Lemar lobs a ball over the top to a streaking Antoine Griezmann who lays it off to an open Olivier Giroud. Giroud blasts a right footed shot that flies over the crossbar, however the play is all for naught as the linesman's flag shoots up on the far side of the field to indicate that Griezmann was indeed offside on the original pass.
41' KJAER CLEAR
Ousmane Dembele blazes down the right side of the area to send in a chipped floated cross to the far post looking to find Olivier Giroud. The pass appears to hang in the air just long enough for the French striker to reach it, but Simon Kjaer intervenes to clear the ball out of the area.
39' SCHMEICHEL EASY SAVE
Antoine Griezmann receives the ball just outside the area following a rapidly building French counter attack and decides to have a go on net from distance. Griezmann's shot is taken well, however it is placed right where Kasper Schmeichel stands in the middle of goal making his save completely routine.
33' DEMBELE SHOT
Ousmane Dembele gets Thomas Delaney to bite on a nice fake outside the area. Dembele takes an extra dribble to avoid the leaping midfielder and hammer a long range shot. The effort is well struck, but is always bending wide of Kasper Schmeichel's far post.
29' ERIKSEN INTO THE AREA!
Andreas Cornelius plays an absolutely perfect cross on the ground from the left flank that seemingly takes ages to reach Christian Eriksen at the penalty spot. Eriksen reaches the ball at the exact same instance as Steve Mandanda and Lucas Hernandez and the three collide. Again the Danes appeal for a PK, but this one appears to have been called correctly as the three all played the ball in a fair manner. Just an unlucky timing for the Tottenham superstar.
26' LEMAR CROSS
Thomas Lemar bends in a cross from a free kick on the left side of the attacking third. The cross is placed well at the far post, but Simon Kjaer is able to perform a deft flicked clearance to give France a corner kick.
22' DANISH CORNER KICK
A Danish corner is sent into the center of the box just as Olivier Giroud brings Thomas Delaney to the ground as the two fight for position. The play continues on with no foul called, however the Danes once again plead for a penalty kick to Sandro Ricci.
19' SIDIBE CROSS
Djibril Sidibe swings in a cross from the left flank once again seeking to find Olivier Giroud, but the striker's club teammate Andreas Christensen pulls back into the area from the midfield to cut the pass off and clear it away from danger.
15' GIROUD CHIP
Lucas Hernandez combines with Olivier Giroud for a nice give and go inside the area that leads to the Chelsea striker having an attempt on goal. The shot is an interestingly taken left footed chip that nearly beats Kasper Schmeichel, however the keeper rises up and knocks it over the crossbar to grant France a corner kick.
11' DANISH DEFENSE
The French appear completely out of sync on the attack and are clearly becoming frustrated. The Danish have been extremely rigid at the back with exceptional positioning so far.
8' CLEARANCE
Antoine Griezmann speeds down the right side of the field and whips in France's first cross of the match looking to link up with the large Olivier Giroud. Huddersfield Town's Mathias Jorgensen, or Zanka, is in position to make the easy clearance though.
6' KANTE SAVES THE DAY
Denmark are forcing the issue early against the French defense down the right wing! Martin Braithwaite and Christian Eriksen combine for a lovely series of passes to threaten Steve Mandanda, but N'Golo Kante is luckily in position to make a last gasp tackle to clear the danger.
4' PENALTY!?
Martin Braithwaite finds his way into the area and nearly to the edge of the six yard box, but the arms of Presnel Kimpembe wrap him up from behind causing the forward to go to the ground! Shouts for a penalty come from Denmark, however Ricci allows play to continue on with no foul called.
1' KICKOFF
Brazil’s Sandro Ricci blows his whistle and this match is underway! The Danes attack from left to right in their red tops and white shorts, while the French wear a white shirt and navy blue bottoms.
0' STADIUM PROFILE
Today’s venue Luzhniki Stadium opened in July 1956 and was most recently renovated in 2017. The stadium is located in a spectacular green space on the banks of the Moskva River just southwest of the Moscow city center. Luzhniki Stadium will host a total of seven matches in this year’s World Cup including the opening match which saw Russia thump Saudi Arabia 5-0 as well as the Final on July 15th.
0' HISTORY
As these two nations are both in UEFA they have a lengthy track record of playing one another. France owns the all time record of 8-1-4 spanning across several competitions including World Cups, UEFA European Championships, and International Friendlies. The two previous World Cup meetings occurred in 2002 when the Danes shocked the French by the score of 2-0 and in 1998. Their meeting at the France World Cup, which ended in a 2-1 win for France, also was a Matchday 3 game in Group C that resulted in Les Bleus claiming the top spot in the group while the Danes advanced to the knockout phases in second place.
0' DANISH STRUGGLES
Similarly, the Danish Dynamite have struggled thus far in the 2018 World Cup. They too eked out a 1-0 victory over Peru, conversely they split the points with a feisty Australian team nearly found a late winner several times. The Danes will likely be without William Kvist after the midfielder fractured two ribs and punctured a lung against Peru, but they will positively miss Yussuf Poulsen due to yellow card accumulation. Can Denmark earn the one point needed to confirm a spot into the next round or will the French open a door for the Australians?
0' FRANCE IS THROUGH
Many believe that France began this tournament on the wrong foot with two poor performances against weaker teams, however they are the only team that has been confirmed of advancing to the next round in Group C. A late own goal gifted Les Bleus a victory over the Socceroos while a first half goal against Peru was enough to sneak out the three points last Thursday. Perhaps the French need to come up against a highly talented team to unlock their true capability and a team like Denmark will certainly provide them with that opportunity.
