Poland vs. Senegal
Minute Commentary
Thank you for joining us today, however the action is not over yet from Russia! Follow along to our coverage as in just under an hour we will have Egypt and Russia facing off in St. Petersburg.
There will definitely be some controversy that surrounds this game, especially now that the goal in question turns out to be the winner. The referee clearly waved Mbaye Niang back onto the field, but should he have? That seems to be the main complaint from the Polish side, but either way this one goes down in the history books as a 2-1 Senegal victory. Poland did manage to create several chances in the dying minutes of the match, including a brilliantly worked goal, but it was far too little and way too late. They must now look to gather their composure as Group H is up for grabs after two astounding upsets today.
This game is over! Senegal shock Poland by the score of 2-1 in Moscow!
Michal Pazdan floats a cross in from the left side of the midfield that seems to be perfectly placed, however Khadim Ndiaye once again comes off his line bravely to deliver a decisive punch to clear the danger.
Poland takes a corner kick from the right flag that swings out to the far post in the final minutes of the match! The ball hangs up in the air for a lengthy amount of time, just enough to allow Khadim Ndiaye a moment to charge out and claim it in midair.
Kamil Grosicki whips in a beautiful cross from a free kick situation from the right side of the midfield. The ball is met by Grzegorz Krychowiak on the left post who then headed the ball back across the face of net and into the upper right corner! Poland now trail by just a goal with three minutes remaining, not including stoppage time.
86' GOAL!
Poland cut the lead in half late! The score is 2-1 for Senegal!
Ismaila Sarr flies down the right flank and into the area with no defender marking him! Maciej Rybus reels him in to throw in a questionable challenge that seems to catch Sarr and send him to the ground. The underdogs beg for a penalty, nonetheless the referee allows play to continue on as he ignores their pleas.
Robert Lewandowski chests down a floated pass inside the area and tries to turn toward goal in order to cut the lead in half. A deft tackle from a Senegal defender knocks the ball away, but right into the path of an unmarked Maciej Rybus! The midfielder tries his luck, however his shot is blocked making it far too easy for the keeper to clean up the rebound.
Another cross into the area from the left wing by the Polish picks out the substitute Dawid Kownacki on the far post! Kownacki puts a firm headed effort on goal, but the fact that it bounces off the field allows Khadim Ndiaye the split second he needs to track it down and catch it next to the far post.
Maciej Rybus sizzles down the left side of the pitch and into the area to attempt a cross! The pass takes a strange bounce off of a Senegalese defender causing it to sit dangerously inside the six yard box, but Khadim Ndiaye comes off his line to collect the ball.
Aliou Cisse elects to make his second substitution of the game that brings off the hobbled goal scorer Mbaye Niang for the seasoned veteran of the Senegalese team Moussa Konate.
Idrissa Gueye scythes down Grzegorz Krychowiak from behind in the center of the midfield and play is halted for the foul. Nawaf Abdulla Shukralla calmly walks over to the Senegalese player and awards him the third yellow card of the match.
Lukasz Piszczek creates the best chance that the Polish have found throughout the first half as he charges down a ball on the right wing. He then cuts back a pass to the near post and finds an open Arkadiusz Milik who tries to poke the ball passed Khadim Ndiaye. The effort is well taken, but ultimately it goes a few feet wide of the post.
Poland have to find some type of success in the attack and the must do it fast. They have hardly even challenged Khadim Ndiaye and the Senegalese back line thus far. Can they break down the Lions defense or will the Senegalese pull off the upset today in Moscow?
Mbaye Niang, who was just a moment before waved back onto the field by the officials after undergoing treatment for an injury, pounced on a poor backpass from Grzegorz Krychowiak. Most of the Polish players had no idea that he had reentered the field and Niang is able to poke the ball around a charging Wojciech Szczesny to then dribble the ball into the empty net. Wow! This goal will certainly be surrounded by controversy.
60' GOAL!
GOAAAAL! Senegal have scored to double their lead!
Maciej Rybus floats a cross through the area to the right post to connect with the streaking Lukasz Piszczek! The right back gauges the situation and attempts a volley off the inside of his right foot, however his effort is mishit as it bounces into the ground and out over the end line.
Ismaila Sarr swings in a cross from the right side of the pitch that takes another fortunate deflection for Senegal off of a Polish defender that sends the ball directly into the center of the area. Mame Diouf waits at the penalty spot and lashes at the ball, but totally whiffs allowing the ball to run harmlessly out of the box.
Khadim Ndiaye makes a spectacular diving save to deny Robert Lewandowski of a free kick goal! The strike was pure from the Bayern Munich forward, but the keeper tracked down the ball and incredibly punched it away.
Robert Lewandowski speeds through the midfield and sees acres of open pitch between him and goal, but Salif Sane intervenes with a harsh tackle that sends the striker to ground! The Polish players plead for a red card, however today's referee instead shows a yellow card to Sane.
Just a few moments into the first half and Jan Bednarek is already down with an apparent head injury. The substitute made a clearance, but then was plowed into by an attacking Senegal player. The defender seems like he will be able to continue on though.
The second half begins in Moscow! The teams have switched ends and Poland will now attack from right to left. There was also one change made at the break by Adam Nawalka who brings on Jan Bednarek for Jakub Blaszczykowski.
Overall this first half was chaotic and messy. Both teams seemed to lack the quality needed to create a goal, but Senegal proved that belief wrong (albeit with a crazy double deflected own goal off of Thiago Cionek). Adam Nawalka and the Eagles must make several changes at half if they have any hope of salvaging a point from this match. A halftime lead will mean that the Lions of Teranga can sit back and use their impressive speed to hit the Polish on the break.
The whistle is blown and we head to halftime with Senegal leading Poland by the score of 1-0!
Mbaye Niang sends in a corner kick from the right flag and is able to find a wide open Salif Sane near the penalty spot! Sane absolutely drills a header with real pace, but he hits it directly into the ground resulting in it bouncing several yards above of Wojciech Szczesny's net.
Ouch, this one will likely go down as an own goal for Thiago Cionek. Idrissa Gueye hammered a shot from distance that initially was blocked by a lunging Polish player and then took an insane second deflection off of Cionek's leg causing it to roll slowly by a rooted Wojciech Szczesny and into the open net.
Senegal have grabbed the lead with a very fortunate deflection! They lead 1-0!
A cross from the right wing has lovely service to the center of the area and nearly finds Mame Diouf, however the whistle blows as the linesman's flag on the far side shoots up to indicate offside.
Both Poland and Senegal appear to be content with possessing the ball in the center of the pitch and waiting for runs to lob long balls over the top. The Polish have found a little bit of success using this strategy, but nothing noteworthy, while the Senegalese attacks all seem to crash and burn at the edge of the box.
Robert Lewandowski chests down the ball at the top of the box and decides to have his first go of the game. His volleyed attempt is poor in the end, the power is taken out when it bounced off the pitch and it was placed entirely off target as well.
If there was one word that could be used to describe the early goings of this match it would be 'sloppy'. The passes in the final third have been abysmal, while those taking place in the midfield have been completely inaccurate. The action is from end to end, but this game lacks any flow.
Grzegorz Krychowiak is shown the match's first yellow card following his questionable tackle on Mbaye Niang during a Senegalese counter attack. The midfielder went to ground and nearly timed his tackle perfectly, but a slight tug to the opposing player's shirt brought him to the ground and was a clear foul.
Mbaye Niang drives down the left flank and floats a cross to the back post looking to find the trailing run of Ismaila Sarr! The ball does make it through the area to the attacking Senegalese player, but it takes an unfortunate bounce that prevents him from connecting with it. The Eagles defense is granted time to regroup as they sweep the ball out of the box.
Mbaye Niang delivers the first corner of the match from the left flag, however it is extremely poorly taken as it is easily cut out at the near post and headed away from danger.
We are underway in Moscow! Poland attack from left to right in their traditional white and red kits, while the Senegalese wear a bright and busy green kit. Today’s officials consist of Nawaf Shukralla and Yaser Tulefat from Bahrain as well as Taleb Al Marri and Abdulrahman Al Jassim from Qatar.
Senegal (4-4-2): Khadim Ndiaye, Kalidou Koulibaly, Idrissa Gueye, Salif Sane, Mame Diouf, Sadio Mane, Youssouf Sabaly, Alfred Ndiaye, Ismaila Sarr, Mbaye Niang, Moussa Wague
Poland Substitutes: Artur Jedrzejczyk, Jan Bednarek, Jacek Goralski, Karol Linetty, Bartosz Bialkowski, Lukasz Teodorczyk, Bartosz Bereszynski, Slawomir Peszko, Kamil Glik, Dawid Kownacki, Lukasz Fabianski, Rafal Kurzawa
Poland (4-2-3-1): Wojciech Szczesny, Michal Pazdan, Thiago Cionek, Arkadiusz Milik, Robert Lewandowski, Grzegorz Krychowiak, Kamil Grosicki, Maciej Rybus, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Piotr Zielinski, Lukasz Piszczek
The fantastically named Lions of Teranga have only qualified for the World Cup once in their history, however when they did Senegal managed to make it all the way to the Quarterfinals in 2002. Senegal search to prove just how dangerous an African nation can be in international play with household names like Kalidou Koulibaly, Alfred N’Diaye, Diafra Sakho, and Liverpool’s breakout superstar Sadio Mane. The Lions of Teranga absolutely tore through the CAF qualification for this year’s World Cup with a 5-3-0 record and an outstanding +10 goal differential. Can they keep their unbeaten run in competitive matches running?
The Polish national team must look at the events that transpired earlier this morning between Colombia and Japan as a clear opportunity to take control of Group H. After missing the World Cup in 2010 and 2014, the Eagles must make their statement early in Russia to show the globe what they are truly capable of. Poland could make waves in this year’s tournament with one of the most feared strikers in the world in Robert Lewandowski up top, with a midfield powered by the likes of Grzegorz Krychowiak and Jakub Blaszczykowski, and Wojciech Szczesny providing a solid anchor in net.
The only two teams yet to begin their 2018 World Cup journey take the field today as Poland and Senegal face off. The action will get underway at Spartak Stadium in Moscow in just over an hour’s time, but let’s take a look at these two nations’ recent form and the starting lineups.
